Description

How much carbon can Australian landscapes absorb under different climate futures? This project explores the role of terrestrial landscapes in sequestering carbon. The project also provides support for climate policy decisions and guidance for sustainable land management strategies.

Tracking carbon sinks for a net-zero future

The project aims to examine the evolution of terrestrial carbon sinks under different climate futures, land-use/forestry changes and wildfire scenarios. By using data-modelling platforms, the research will assess potential carbon sequestration at different spatial scales, from farm-level case studies to Australia-wide and globally. The study explores how planting, protecting and restoring vegetation can help capture and store carbon in Australian landscapes, while also examining how climate change might affect this ability in the future. The project also examines the potential of farming practices and land-use changes to sequester carbon, providing valuable insights into how these efforts can support Australia’s long-term climate goals.

Translating carbon budget insights into policy and practice

Through collaboration with federal, state and territory decision makers, the project will directly inform policy decisions to optimise carbon sequestration programs. It will also identify vulnerable carbon sinks for appropriate conservation actions. The project will also provide actionable insights for state and territory-based greenhouse gas accounting programs. Carbon budgets are aligned with the Paris Agreement. Engaging with the farming community will encourage participation in carbon sequestration programs. Farm-based case studies using advanced modelling tools will provide valuable guidance on integrating carbon sequestration into farming systems, contributing to Australia’s broader climate adaptation and greenhouse gas emission reduction strategies and targets. Project outcomes will help improve Australia’s capacity to monitor its net-zero trajectory and develop more effective land management strategies for sequestering carbon.
