Description

This collaborative project between Griffith University and the Carpentaria Land Council Aboriginal Corporation (CLCAC) will examine high-priority fish species which have important environmental and cultural values across the southern Gulf of Carpentaria. This area is under increasing pressure from water development and land degradation. The information collected about the fish species will be linked with water quality and flow regime to gain a picture of the factors impacting species and diversity. Additionally, information on the cultural values of fish species identified from the sampling will be gathered across the lands of the Traditional Owners. The combination of cultural and environmental information on fish will improve the ability to sustainably manage these ecosystems. This study will also involve training to upskill the rangers and build capacity to conduct ongoing monitoring and support sustainable management of the lands and waterways.
