Description

This research project aims to improve the understanding and strategic management of the combined impacts of fire and drought in the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area (GBM WHA). The project will be co-designed with Traditional Owners, researchers, land managers and other research users to synergise perspectives, methods and research needs for this Priority Place. Our research efforts will focus on understanding where and under what circumstances parts of the landscape are buffered from over-exposure to fire and drought (i.e. ‘refugia’) and will also evaluate the broader ecological consequences of specific fire-management actions that are designed to conserve endemic/iconic taxa. Improving knowledge of the landscape processes that give rise to plant refugia and how management actions impact ecological integrity will help to refine current management practices, build in future landscape resilience, and provide tools and insights for the adaptive management approaches that will be required to improve the condition of the GBM WHA now and into the future.
