Description

The recognition of species and ecological communities of cultural significance to Indigenous Australians (culturally significant entities [CSEs]) presents a key opportunity to move towards recognising Indigenous knowledge and integrating traditional management practices into land management and conservation policy and practice. However, at present, there is no consistent national definition of a CSE, and CSEs are not considered by policy-makers in the same way that other entities, such as threatened species, are considered. This project aims to highlight the importance of collaborative and Indigenous-led management of CSEs in biodiversity conservation and enable the subsequent empowerment of Indigenous-led decision-making to inform conservation planning.
