Description

Surface groundwater-dependent ecosystems (GDEs) in arid zones are critically important for biodiversity, and many are recognised by Traditional Owners as significant places in the cultural landscape. Increasing interest in developing the water resources in Australia’s arid zone has highlighted the need for a beter understanding of the ecology and socio-cultural values associated with GDEs and the potential risks from water extraction. This project will use Indigenous knowledge, remotely sensed data, hydrogeological information and ecological field surveys to improve methods for detecting and mapping GDEs, assessing risks of water extraction on flora, fauna and socio-cultural values, and monitoring changes in their extent and condition.
