Descriptions

Description

This project aims to assess risks, identify priority recovery actions and fill critical knowledge gaps to inform management and conservation of rare and threatened freshwater fish in the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area of north-eastern Queensland. Recent extreme weather events and associated catastrophic floods caused by Cyclone Jasper, ongoing habitat degradation and invasive species are posing increasing risks to freshwater fish and their critical wetland habitats in the region. Project activities include risk assessment and recovery planning through desktop reviews and expert workshops, as well as field surveys and laboratory studies in the high priority Bloomfield River. The project will involve scientific and community stakeholders from Universities, Government, NGO’s, NRM groups and Indigenous groups. The project will deliver applied research outcomes to support freshwater fish species management after extreme events and planning for rare and threatened species recovery at national and state levels. The approaches developed and trialled in this project will be transferable to other catchments and threatened species. The project will help to address priority research gaps for threatened and significant species and support the resilience and management of existing protected areas.
