Description

This research project explores how Years 3–4 teachers in the Diocese of Sale Catholic Education Limited (DOSCEL) perceive Religious Education (RE) and the professional development (PD) and formation they receive or seek. While RE is central to the mission of Catholic education, many generalist primary teachers report feeling underprepared to teach it confidently and meaningfully. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, this study will gather data through semi-structured interviews and narrative-style surveys. It aims to capture teachers’ lived experiences, highlight the challenges they face, and identify the kinds of PD and formation that would most support their RE teaching practice. The findings will offer insights into how diocesan policies and curriculum frameworks align with classroom realities, and will inform future development of RE-specific PD that is theologically grounded, practically relevant, and responsive to teacher needs. This research contributes to strengthening Catholic identity through more effective and supportive teacher formation.
