Descriptions

Description
This project aims to use data collected from paediatric cochlear implant recipients from Perth Children’s Hospital (PCH), to analyse the prevalence and types of medical comorbidities within this population. Studies have shown that a significant proportion of patients with congenital deafness also have additional medical comorbidities, many of which are associated with poorer surgical and developmental outcomes. Importantly, patients with medical comorbidities are frequently excluded from cochlear implant studies, so published research investigating outcomes may not accurately reflect a large proportion of the patient population. PCH is the main tertiary implant clinic for paediatric patients in the state, and having more information about the prevalence of comorbidities within the implant patient population may influence future outcomes for these patients. This project would allow implant teams to contextualise the outcomes for patients more broadly by comparing those with and without medical comorbidities. The findings will be important for future service provision and planning and allow comparison of outcomes with the literature and other implant centres with a similar comorbid composition.
