Description

This project is comprised of 2 related studies.

Study 1 is a longitudinal retrospective observational study aimed at identifying and collating activities recorded from patient admission through the Lower Limb Functional Index (LLFI) and QuickDASH. This study has WA Health Central HREC approval as a WA Burn Clinical Data Registry Program subproject (RGS2233). Then we will assign a Metabolic Equivalent activity intensity estimation to patients based on their reported activities in these surveys. Approximately 1000 patients have already had their pre-morbid activity levels estimated by assigning a MET value based on LLFI and QuickDASH survey results (by previous investigators not affiliated with UNDA). We will increase the data to include surveys of patients taken from 2006-2013 and 2021-current, which we expect to increase the data set by >500 patients. Our analysis will involve exploring the associations between activity intensity categories and the functional and QoL outcomes at 6 and 12 weeks after burn injury.

Study 2 is a prospective cross-sectional methods-comparison study between two self-reported physical activity surveys, the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) and Duke Activity Status Index (DASI.) This study has low risk Ethics approval as a quality improvement project at Fiona Stanley Hospital (GEKO66142). It involves recruiting adult burns patients from the outpatient clinics and the inpatient ward over a 5-week period within the State Adult Burns Unit at Fiona Stanley Hospital. Most patients will be intercepted from the outpatient clinic waiting room and will be offered the opportunity to complete the anonymous surveys. The surveys conducted will be the LLFI & QuickDASH (which are routinely collected clinical surveys), as well as the DASI and IPAQ. The aim of this study is to explore which physical activity survey (IPAQ) or (DASI) scores are most associated with self-reported pre burn physical activity levels, compared with MET values assigned using LLFI and QuickDASH scores.
