Descriptions

Description
Globally, health services are experiencing shortages of midwifery professionals. Similar to other international and national jurisdictions, Western Australia (WA) is grappling with shortages in the midwifery workforce exacerbated by the COVID pandemic, strict border closures and midwives leaving profession. To promote the growth and sustainability of the midwifery workforce, the Chief Nursing and Midwifery Office has partnered with The University of Notre Dame to establish a pilot ‘Paid Employment Model’ for midwifery students. This model supports Registered Nurses to undertake a Diploma of Midwifery while retaining paid part-time employment within a WA HSP. It is envisaged that this model will attract and retain midwifery students who are then employed as professional midwives after graduation. WA Health has funded 60 students, 40 in WACHS and 20 in metropolitan settings, to undertake the pilot program along with six clinical facilitators to provide on-site support. This project aims to evaluate the implementation, effectiveness, impact and economic benefit of the Paid Employment Model for midwifery students.
