Descriptions

Description
Preterm birth, defined as delivery before 37 weeks' gestation, poses significant risks to neonatal health and can lead to long-term consequences. Cervical shortening is a common precursor to preterm birth, and prevents the mechanical reinforcement of the cervix, in maintaining the pregnancy. Topical vaginal progesterone and cervical cerclage are medical interventions aimed at prolonging gestation and reducing preterm birth rates. While cerclage is more effective in extreme cases of shortening (<10mm), combining progesterone with cerclage shows promise in moderately shortened cervixes (25-10mm). This prospective pilot study seeks to assess the efficacy of this combined approach in increasing gestational age and minimising neonatal complications.
