Description
This Honours project in History will investigate publicly available archival records held at the WA State Records Office about the 1983-1984 Western Australia Aboriginal Land Inquiry. In 1983, the Burke government commissioned the inquiry in an attempt to fulfill their election promise on land rights, appointing Justice Paul Seaman to find the best form of land rights for Western Australia. The inquiry emerged at a time of growing unrest and land rights activism among Aboriginal people, particularly in WA with the steady encroach of mining in the north-west, and creation of the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act of 1976/77, that was passed by the Liberal Federal Government. Several hundred submissions were received from many sectors of WA society and more broadly. These included Aboriginal organisations, the resource industry, pastoralists and graziers, community groups, academics, and lawyers.
To date, limited to no historical research has been conducted on this project. This project seeks to place this Aboriginal Land Inquiry in its full historical context, including the fact that land – who owns it, and who has access to it – is at the core of settler-colonialism. This inquiry was the first time Indigenous communities had been asked about their vision for the future. This project seeks to recover their forgotten voices.
