Descriptions

Description
There is a growing global demand to approach maternal healthcare in a more woman-centred, culturally sensitive, and humanised way (16). A national survey from Australia indicates that around half of all women giving birth experience some level of birth trauma within the maternity system, and that 85% of women would make different choices for their next birth (17). A humanised approach to maternal health care not only addresses the physical needs of mothers but also prioritises their mental, emotional, and social well-being. The evidence demonstrates that such approaches lead to better health outcomes, higher satisfaction, and reduced disparities, making it a beneficial model for maternal health care (18,19, 20, 21). Acupuncture supports humanised holistic care by providing personalised, integrative, and culturally sensitive treatments that address the mind-body connection, and thus, can play a supportive role in maternity care (22). Acupuncture’s ability to reduce stress, improve mental health (23,24, 25) and manage pain (26, 27) aligns well with the principles of holistic and humanised care and highlights acupuncture's role in enhancing patient-centred, comprehensive health care (28). Acupuncture services are not new to BC Women's Hospital, as acupuncture has been offered at the ‘Families In Recovery’ (FIR) Unit for 2.5 years, and is the most requested and utilised allied health service on the unit. Verbal feedback from the FIR unit's patients suggest that acupuncture significantly improved conditions such as mental health, sleep quality, stress levels, and other concerns. However, no formal evaluation of the service offered at FIR has occurred. Because of the noted success in the FIR unit, a pilot program to expand to the antenatal unit (Evergreen) and the Reproductive Mental Health outpatient unit was created. This study, which evaluates this service, will be conducted at BC Women's antenatal unit, Evergreen, to examine what conditions acupuncture is most commonly requested for, and to examine its benefits or harms. The findings will help determine whether acupuncture positively supports clinical practice and if the services should be continued or expanded.
