Descriptions

Description
Quality of life is dependent on psychological and physical wellbeing. Paediatric burn patients have an increased long-term risk of a variety of serious health conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, infectious disease, mental health conditions and cancer (1-6). Chronic inflammation and sustained changes to the immune system after a burn may be related to the increase in morbidities seen in this population regardless of burn size and scar outcome (7, 8). Psychologically, poor mental health outcomes are more likely in a child who has been hospitalised for a burn injury compared to a peer who has not had a burn, and this remains true regardless of burn size, severity, and scar outcome. Psychosocial screening of patients and parents postburn might help us to understand baseline indicators of poor longer-term mental health recovery. Physically, adults who have had a burn injury participate less in leisure-related physical activity (9), and have lower physical fitness (10). Paediatric burn patients might also have lower physical activity levels and impaired fitness resulting from physical and physiological limitations imposed by the burn, psychological limitations of the patient, overprotectiveness of the parent, or due to comorbidities secondary to burn.
