Description

The aim of this study is to estimate the incidence of ICH and neurosurgical intervention for patients ≥75 years taking anticoagulant/antiplatelet agents who have had a suspected minor head injury but did not have any other indications for needing a scan on presentation.

It is hypothesised that the incidence of ICH in elderly patients on anti-coagulant/antiplatelet therapy with no other indicators of head trauma (suspected open or depressed skull fracture; suspected base of skull fracture; vomiting ≥2 episodes; high risk mechanism, amnesia before impact >30 minutes; altered mental state or GCS; loss of consciousness; or alternative concern documented by clinician) will be similar to the emergency department incidence of ICH, which previous studies have estimated at 5%. Furthermore, from those with an ICH on brain CT scan, it is hypothesised that the vast majority will not have a neurosurgical/other intervention that varies from the conservative management for ICH.
