Descriptions

Description
Emergency departments (EDs) are crucial to the Australian health care system and the demand on them is increasing with nine million presentations to Australian public hospital ED’s in 2023-24. In addition, the wait times to see an ED physician or General Practitioner are increasing and this leads to extra pressure placed on emergency nurses, along with frustrated patients, which may lead to increased violence and aggression in the ED. Burn-out is becoming a worrying concern amongst ED nurses. The occupational stressors such as excessive workload, violence and aggression, and staff shortages are placing increased pressure on nurses, which is affecting nurses’ well-being and attrition. The increasing number of ED nurses leaving their job, and the nursing profession is concerning, therefore it is important to understand the stressors and employ strategies to protect these nurses from burn-out, which will may lead to improved retention and improved patient outcomes.
