Description

The primary purpose of this study is to investigate the beliefs and perspectives about play held by teachers, children and parents from a variety of schools and then consider how those beliefs and perspectives influence pedagogical decisions, and the provisions made for play in Western Australian (WA) Pre-Primary (PP) - Year 1 (Yr1) school settings. The aim of this study will be fourfold. First, to explore the beliefs, perspectives and practices of early childhood (EC) teachers who identify as being play-based in their approach to teaching and learning and consider how these beliefs are reflected in the environment, early childhood curriculum, teaching pedagogies and learning experiences employed in PP-Yr1. Second, to investigate the beliefs and practices of children towards play and play-based teaching and learning. Third, to explore the beliefs and perspectives of parents towards play and play-based teaching and learning. Finally, the research will aim to provide an in-depth account of the actual affordances and hindrances to play and implementing a play-based approach during these critical EC years in WA.
