Description
This Participatory Action Research (PAR) project seeks to determine what is ‘best practice’ in the design, delivery and evaluation of on-Country cross-cultural education programs for judges in WA, and to what extent these programs are leading to changes in policy and practice. Co-researchers will include people who are (or have been) involved in the on-Country immersions, including judicial representatives, on-Country hosts, facilitators and interpreters. An Aboriginal Reference Group will oversee the cultural aspects of the research. Methods include one-on-one interviews, courtroom observations, and analysis of court documents. The co-researchers in the PAR will use the findings to inform the design, delivery and evaluation of future programs; develop a 'Theory of change for two-way learning'; and create a framework to inform future evaluations of on-Country programs. The project ultimately aims to build towards a more culturally-safe court environment for Aboriginal people in Western Australia’s criminal justice system.
